Teen-Focused Residential Setting

Set within a 120-acre nature preserve with wooded areas, rolling hills, and streams, the residential environment gives teens physical and emotional space to step away from daily stressors. The setting is rural and quiet, yet still convenient to major New York City and Connecticut airports for traveling families. Gender-separate residences offer structured routines, common spaces for group work and downtime, and a safe environment that supports connection and healthy peer relationships.

Evidence-Based Care and Family Involvement

Treatment plans are individualized and built around evidence-based therapy, with a focus on the underlying trauma and emotional drivers behind teens’ symptoms. Family involvement is central. Parents participate in family therapy and parent support groups based in an attachment-focused model that works to repair trust, strengthen communication, and address patterns that may contribute to conflict at home. This family systems approach supports long-term stability after discharge.

Specialized Track for Teen Boys with Eating Disorders

For teen boys whose mental health conditions are accompanied by secondary eating disorders or body image issues, Newport Academy offers a specialized treatment track. Teens receive clinical and psychiatric support, dietary screenings, and nutrition-focused groups led by registered dietitians. Each teen develops an individualized dietary plan and relapse-prevention plan to bring home. Programming includes body image groups and eating-disorder–specific assignments. Teens also work on distress, anxiety, and core emotional issues.

Experiential Therapies, Academics, and Life Skills

Teens participate in experiential programming designed to support emotional growth and coping skills. Activities include yoga, music therapy, creative expression, adventure therapy, and equine-assisted therapy. These experiences encourage communication, trust, emotional regulation, and healthy risk-taking. Built-in academics ensure students stay on track with schoolwork during treatment, reducing stress about falling behind. Life skills support helps teens practice essential skills — such as planning, self-monitoring, and problem-solving — that can support smoother transitions back home, to school, and into daily routines after treatment.
